From Vision to Reality: The Making of the Coton Centre

The origins of the Coton Centre trace back to 1969, when David and Bobbie Shearer felt inspired to start a new church community in Tamworth.

They began by gathering a small group of like-minded individuals in their home, creating a welcoming space for people to come together, share their values, and support one another. As the group steadily grew, it soon outgrew the living room setting. The congregation moved to Coton Green School, where they could meet regularly and continue developing their sense of community.

These early years laid a strong foundation built on shared purpose, friendship, and a commitment to making a positive impact locally.
By the early 1980s, it became clear that a more permanent and purpose-built space was needed. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of the community, a plot of land was purchased in 1984 on the edge of Tamworth and Lichfield. This milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter. After several years of planning and construction, the Coton Centre officially opened in 1992. Designed to be more than just a place of worship, it was built to serve as a centre for community, events, learning, and support.

Today, the Coton Centre remains a vibrant part of local life.
It hosts a wide range of activities, from gatherings and classes to cultural events and outreach initiatives. Its story is one of growth, collaboration, and a lasting commitment to serving the people of Tamworth and beyond.
